Extra Staples #0011

Stationery-related

The Graphite Lists | The Erasable Podcast
Slowly but surely I will try all of these pencils.

Coastal Birds, Postcard rate | USPS Stamps
Flock Together | USPS Stamps (via Draplin Design Co.)
I like these new USPS stamps, even though I don’t send postcards often.

The Pen Addict #160: Let’s Keep Being Addicts - Relay FM
in which Brad Dowdy explains how he paired every Field Notes Colors edition with a pen or pencil. This sounds like an interesting, fun project. I bet every Field Nut’s pairings would be unique and highly personal.

Going the distance, introducing the #NIXONHUNT
Late to share this but in case you missed it... There’s a special edition of Field Notes that was made for Nixon, and they were recently given away as part of a treasure hunt. You can see the locations where the prizes were hidden at Nixon's Instagram. Are YOU one of the lucky adventurers?

The Roman Alphabet in Asian Design | pencils and other things
I recently complained about the German phrases printed on the Rollbahn notebook covers here, and Sola of Pencils and Other Things gives us some insights into the deign element of Roman alphabets in Asian stationery. A very interesting topic.

Pentel Aquash Water Brush Review — by Nick Folz at The Pen Addict
I used to use these brushes for sketching and really liked them. I agree, it probably doesn’t hurt to carry them protected; I carried them in a ziploc bag. Reading this review made me want to get mine out and experiment again.

Pilot Prera Fountain Pen | All Things Stationery
I don’t own a Prera but M does, and I really like it. It’s not heavy, and the soft “click” of the cap does feel satisfying and luxurious.

Things I tried recently (and liked)

Dixon Ticonderoga Renew pencils
A bit thin for me but I was impressed! Darker and smoother than I expected.

Adding to my wishlist

expletive paper clips - kate spade new york

Uni Style Fit Sanrio
Yet another Hello Kitty limited edition from Japan. But how cute is it that the refills have characters printed on them? Already out in Japan since mid-June, who knows when they’ll be available overseas.

Fun

Moomin font. | Door Sixteen

Paper Ice Creams | Mr. Printables

Bands, Buttons, and Backrim Text! | Busy Beaver Button Co. Blog
Have you ever looked at the back of Field Notes buttons? See those texts along the rim? They’re called backrim text. I learn something new every day.

Text Smilies Generator | ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°) (via Present & Correct)
Heh, I made ⤜(•ᴥ•)⤏ with this generator.

Hope you all have a wonderful week. And happy Fourth of July!

Delfonics Rollbahn Notebook with Suica’s Penguin

June 26, 2015

On the heels of my “main” Rollbahn spiral notebook post, I present you with this fun Suica’s Penguin edition. I don’t know if the cover is the same color as the red one from Rollbahn’s regular line-up but I really like this particular red. And the illustration of the newly renovated Tokyo Station! It’s a simple, clean design, and the cute little penguin doesn’t hurt either.

Other than the cover, all the details are the same as the regular edition. Or so I thought! There was a surprise waiting for me when I finally opened it:

I prefer my notebook pages to be void of any branding but eh, this was bought on a whim for the fun of it during a trip, so I’ll let it slide. ;)

What’s with the penguin? It’s the official mascot for Suica, a rechargeable smart card issued by Japan Railway (JR) East that you use for public transporation in many areas of Japan. The Suica card is very convenient for traveling in Tokyo, and you see this mascot quite often at train stations and at stores where they accept Suica as an electronic payment. And if you’re familiar with Japan, you know they’re huge on mascots and characters. And merchandise! There are stores dedicated to characters, and many everyday products, from cosmetics to stationery, get adorned with them and sold as special or limited editions. Delfonics Rollbahn notebooks seem to be no exception. But I think this is tastefully done. It’s not too loud and actually appropriate, considering the existing travel theme of “Rollbahn”.

I found this notebook by accident at Reading Style at KITTE Marunouchi, a new mall I highly recommend located right across from Tokyo Station. A fellow shopper was carrying two of these notebooks to the register, and I reconized them as Rollbahn right away and had to find them! Thankfully, she left one behind for me to grab. I’m quite attached to it since it reminds me many details of my trip: the fact that it was my first time going through Tokyo Station since the renovation was completed, with the brick façade and the dome, and the wonderful view of the station from KITTE’s rooftop garden made possible by a brief pause in the rain.

And I ♥ penguins.

Because I haven’t made a GIF in so long... But can you blame me? That JR hat!!
