Sharpie Magnum

May 16, 2016

I think my recent move did a number on my daily journaling habit. I was in such a time crunch and so tired that there were many days where I failed to write anything down in my Field Notes, or in Hobonichi no less. I'm slowly relearning my daily routine and using my favorite pens and pencils more regularly now. But during the move, I think the “pen” I used most often was this Sharpie Magnum. Not my trusty Pentel EnerGel Euro Needle or Uni-ball Signo (even though these were included in my go-to pencil case, with everything else packed away). Just this hefty, smelly, oil-based, black marker.

As you can see it's much thicker than the “regular” Sharpie marker, with a very wide tip. For the longest time, I had no idea it existed, even though I've been a long-time user of various Sharpie markers. I wish I'd had it during my previous moves because it was so convenient for labeling my moving boxes. See, I like to number my boxes and then keep a very detailed list of each box's contents, grouped by numbers (the list was kept on my iPhone this time). It makes searching for specific items so much easier later. While the regular Sharpie (in “Fine Point”) would have been adequate for labeling on the boxes, with the Magnum marker I was able to write bolder numbers much faster that are easier to read. A case in point that the tip size matters.

These days, I just use it for the initial purpose for which I bought it: to cross off any unwanted marks or addresses on packages before I discard them or reuse them. Do you use any big markers like this often? What do you use them for? What was your favorite tool during your last move?

Extra Staples #0019

April 25, 2016

Extra Staples is a series of posts where I share various links I find interesting. It is not on any regular schedule, and the links can be old or new.

Hello, it’s been a long time! The dust here at Three Staples is finally settling down a bit, as I slowly unpack and regain some level of normalcy. And I missed keeping up with the stationery community! A lot has happened, hasn’t it? For one thing, Point Oh! released their special Field Notes edition for sale online. Sadly, I missed it, and now it's all sold-out. Bah. And the 200th episode of The Pen Addict! What a milestone! Slowly but surely, I will catch up with all my favorite podcasts.

Here are other links that caught my attention recently:

Eraser Round Up | the weekly pencil.
So many erasers I’ve seen but haven’t tried yet. I must try the Matomaru-kun next!

Stationery Travel Kit - Isle of Wight — The Finer Point
As someone who’s written about her own travel journaling kit, I found Jenny’s kit fun to look into. What a cute backpack and that pen roll! I’m also inspired by her dedication to learn to paint and draw, even when she’s traveling.

A Small Tale of Pen Grail – Pete Denison
I don’t know how to define a grail pen for me but I know I don’t have one yet. Will I ever feel the need to go on a quest for one in the future? Who knows but reading about Pete’s made me smile and happy that he already has one.

Bus-Riding in Montevideo | pencils and other things
An interesting glimpse into what riding on a public bus feels like in a country I’ve never been. And stationery ads on buses! Now that’s something I haven’t seen in the US. Have you?

The Art of Fountain Pen Photography — Susan M. Pigott at The Pen Addict
Wow, I always wondered how Susan takes such amazing photos, and in this post, she shares her tools and set-ups. I may prefer simpler backgrounds but I think it's great that she expresses herself through a variety of props. They’re really fun and make me want all kinds of pens. :)

Blackwing 24: Holy Grail or Piltdown Man? – Stephen Watts at PENCIL REVOLUTION
On top of my stationery shopping list is Palomino Blackwing Volume 24, and this post made me even more anxious to try them. And it made me add Blaisdell Calculator 600 to my wishlist, although it will be really tough to obtain.

And last but not least…

Commemorative Reprints | Field Notes Brand
The folks at Field Notes have been up to no good! :D By no good, I mean real good. They mailed each current COLORS subscriber a special 2-set commemorative reprint of Butcher Orange and Butcher Extra Blue recently, as a bonus to the 30th quarterly edition Sweet Tooth (the 2-pack’s item number is FNC-30a). Those are the first two editions of COLORS from way back in 2008/2009 and the rarest. That surprise came out of nowhere! And the coolest thing is that the belly band is printed with each subscriber's name! Amaze. My subscription had lapsed but this little perk convinced me to renew pronto, and I'm told I'll get my own custom set in June. If you want your custom reprints, COLORS subscription starting with Sweet Tooth is still available here.

Hope you all have a good week,
♥ Jinnie

February 2015 was HUGE for me, you guys. I got some shout outs directly from Jim Coudal and Field Notes.

And another one!

Thanks for that. :)
