Celebrating Pencils: My Current Favorites

March 30, 2018

In celebration of National Pencil Day today, I’d like to highlight some of my favorite woodcase pencils here. These are not favorite of all time, which would be nearly impossible to choose, but just pencils that I really like and keep reaching for. Coincidentally, they are all black.

IBM Electrographic

The IBM Electrographic pencil has been my favorite for a few years now. It has a special place in my heart because it’s the first vintage pencil that I fell in love with, pushing me further down the pencil rabbit hole. I got a black hexagonal version first from CW Pencils in 2015, and my immediate reaction after trying it was to look for a dozen. I now have a small stash of 3 different versions of it, but for some reason I like this round, black version the best (found on eBay). I love how dark and soft the graphite is, and have used up many so far solving crossword puzzles. Since they’re vintage, the red erasers are no longer serviceable, but I’ve topped them with Pentel Hi-Polymer eraser caps, or taken them out entirely and replaced them with eraser pen refills that I cut to size.

Caran d’Ache Black Wood 499

I love the idea of jumbo pencils. It’s not nostalgia or playfulness that attracts me to them, because I did not grow up with jumbo pencils. Just something about a chunky pencil makes me feel like I’m being super productive and, weirdly, painterly. I tried a bunch but none of them wowed me, until I met this Black Wood. What a beauty. With sophisticated all-black design and buttery graphite that glides, I knew instantly I’d met my go-to jumbo pencil. It also opened my eyes to the brand Caran d’Ache. These days, I use Black Wood regularly with my Jibun Techo (it’s especially nice on Tomoe River paper), and I sharpen it with the double-hole sharpener from Möbius & Ruppert.

Apsara Matt Magic

I’ve only tried a few pencils from Apsara so far, but I’ve liked them all. This Matt Magic is no exception and has quickly become my favorite regular pencil. I just love everything about it, from the colorful dyed wood, to its quirky name. As with all pencils, it’s hard to describe how it writes and feels, but there’s something effortless about the core that I really enjoy. It’s dark and smooth, but not in a crumbly way. And the whole pencil just feels firm and solid in construction, more so than a lot of other pencils. Maybe I'm making stuff up. Anyway, at less than a dollar each, I'm totally going to get more in different wood colors.

These days, I use pencils mostly in my planner (Jibun Techo, left) and Field Notes (inserted in Traveler's Notebook cover on the right). Inspired by Tim Wasem on Erasable Podcast, I put Pilot Metropolitan fountain pen cap on Black Wood. The fit is a…

The fit is a tad loose, but it’ll do for now.

Field Notes

New releases from Field Notes that I haven’t gotten yet...

Everyday Inspiration: leather cover & memo books
A collaboration between Field Notes and Bellroy, an Australian company that specializes in wallets. Looking quite compact and sharp! I am especially intrigued by the magnetic closure. Not 100% sure but it looks like the cover comes with 3 custom Bellroy-brand memo books in the form of one single + one 2-pack (according to the belly band in the pictures). Interesting!

The New Pitch Black, in standard memo book size and “note book” size
I love duplex covers, so this news is pretty exciting. And it’s cool that the price for the standard size is still $9.95 and that they’re offering both sizes in both ruled and dot grid. I’m still weary of the larger size though. I wonder how stiff the new cover is because the cover stock for Arts & Sciences did not work for me at that size. Anyway, au revoir, old Pitch Black. I’ll miss you all the same.

Field Notes + Ingersoll Notebook Review — Lead Fast
Another thorough review from Michael at Lead Fast. These Field Notes look nice but perhaps I made the right decision to not buy them.

Fieldy
Awesome Field Notes wallpapers created by designer and Field Notes enthusiast Dennis Cortés, presented in a beautiful site. I say it’s a mandatory bookmark for any FN fan (I’m adding it to my Links page).

Stationery-related

The Pen Addict #252: We All Know the Pencil Is Superior to the Pen - Relay FM
An awesome interview with Caroline Weaver of CW Pencil Enterprise that I enjoyed a lot.

Community Member Spotlight: Andy Welfle — the weekly pencil.
A great idea for a series, starting with Andy Welfle, from The Erasable Podcast.

Staedtler’s Kakikata Pencils - Bleistift
Fantastic looking pencils, made by Staedtler for the Japanese market. They’re for kids but I wouldn’t care. Very tastefully designed, even though they may be somewhat gendered.

Polaroid Makes Stationery | Poppytalk
Interesting but I still can’t understand what Polaroid is trying to do.

Things I tried recently (and liked)

The Editor Pencil - HB/Red | CW Pencil Enterprise (pictured at the top)
This is a graphite/vermillion colored pencil combo made by Caran d’Ache for CWPE that I’ve been using it for editing my writing. It’s quite a workhorse! The red is a nice middle of the road shade between cool red and orange, and it doesn’t take too much effort for the color to show up on the paper. Not as dark and effortless as the Uni NanoDia red pencil but still very good. The graphite end is on the hard side but quite smooth.

Fun / Interesting

DDC Hardware typeface ⬢ A comprehensive, industrial sans-serif from Draplin Design Co. & Lost Type
Aaron Draplin, the co-creator of Field Notes, now has a font family under his belt, at one of my favorite font sites. For personal use, you can get it at a pay-what-you-want price.

Zim & Zou - Forest Folks (via Paper Crave)
Colorful paper art installations for a new Hermès store in Dubai, by a team of two French artists.

Papersizes.io (via Present & Correct)
A convenient guide to international paper sizes

Impenetraball — Sculpture by Zachary Abel
“A dense metal mesh constructed from 132 binder clips (and pliers).” Amazing!

Hope you have a good week ahead,
