Field Notes: Instagram Polls (Part 4 - Summer Editions)

October 11, 2019

I’m playing catch-up! I realized I have months worth of Instagram polls I have not recorded here in the blog, so bear with me even if these don’t seem that relevant to you any more. Better late than never!

Here are all the Summer vs. Summer polls I conducted weeks leading up to the release of National Parks (2019 Summer edition of Field Notes).

threestaples-FN-IGpolls-Summer2019-01.jpg

Campfire vs. Three Missions

  • Poll start date: May 10, 2019

  • Total number of votes: 119

  • Winner: Campfire (51%)

This was a bit surprising to me, as I expected Three Missions to win. But then again, it was a very close match. My pick was Three Missions, although I could’ve gone with either one.

Night Sky vs. Byline

  • Poll start date: May 17, 2019

  • Total number of votes: 120

  • Winner: Night Sky (72%)

A decisive victory for my top favorite! I didn’t expect such a big margin though, since Night Sky is, by now, a pretty old edition and I remember people’s raving reaction to Byline when it first came out.

American Tradesman vs. Day Game

  • Poll start date: May 24, 2019

  • Total number of votes: 90

  • Winner: Day Game (52%)

Another close match! I really didn’t know what to expect since both Day Game and American Tradesman are relatively old editions (I’d expect people to be unsure which to pick with editions they’re unfamiliar with; maybe that explains the lower number of total votes). I’m happy that Day Game won though. It’s one of my top favorites, so it was an easy pick for me.

Arts & Sciences vs. Workshop Companion

  • Poll start date: May 31, 2019

  • Total number of votes: 103

  • Winner: Arts & Sciences (50.5%)

Wow, this has to be the closest result I’ve seen so far. And it echoes how I feel about these two. If I really had to pick, I’d go with Arts & Sciences, but another day I might pick Workshop Companion.

Grass Stain Green vs. County Fair

  • Poll start date: June 7, 2019

  • Total number of votes: 93

  • Winner: Grass Stian Green (54%)

This was a tough choice for me, as I really like both Grass Stain Green and County Fair a lot (probably in my top 10 list). But that letterpress on GSG wins it over for me. I’m actually happy to see it didn’t win by a bigger margin because County Fair is an awesome edition as well (that linen texture on the cover!).

American Tradesman vs. Three Missions

  • Poll start date: June 14, 2019

  • Total number of votes: 116

  • Winner: Three Missions (52%)

I thought Three Missions would win by more votes because it’s a newer edition with flashy extras and American Tradesman is an old release (Summer 2011) that’s not often talked about. I guess you never know! My choice was Three Missions. It wasn’t easy but I find Three Missions slightly more interesting, visually and thematically.

County Fair vs. Day Game

  • Poll start date: June 21, 2019

  • Total number of votes: 111

  • Winner: Day Game (59%)

Day Game wins again! Yay! Just like GSG vs. County Fair, this one was difficult for me, but I just love the white foil stamping in the Day Game too much.

What are your reactions to these polls? Did your favorites win? As I’ve said in my previous posts, these results represent only a small percentage of Field Notes fans, people who follow me and happen to view my Instagram Stories at the right time, etc, etc.

If you’d like to participate in my Field Notes polls, follow me on Instagram @threestaples and watch out for new Stories on Fridays.

Field Notes Summer Quarterly Editions So Far

June 1, 2018

The 2018 Summer Quarterly Edition of Field Notes is right around the corner! I can feel it! I received the “A Note to Subscribers” email couple weeks ago, and most of the summer editions were announced some time in June so far (although Day Game was announced in August, I think). So maybe in the next couple weeks? I say, a good excuse as any to look back at all the Summer editions released so far.

Here they are, with edition size and links to my thoughts on them:

  • 2009: Grass Stain Green (1,650 Packs)
  • 2010: County Fair (“so complicated”)
  • 2011: American Tradesman (5,000 Packs)
  • 2012: Day Game (6,000 Packs)
  • 2013: Night Sky (15,000 Packs)
  • 2014: Arts & Sciences (25,000 Packs)
  • 2015: Workshop Companion (17,000 Box Sets)
  • 2016: Byline (25,000 Packs)
  • 2017: Campfire (30,000 Packs)

What a group, huh. With standouts like Night Sky and Grass Stain Stain, whose praises I've sung many times before, you'd think I’d pick summer as my favorite over any other Field Notes season. But summer also includes some of my least favorites, like Arts & Sciences, Byline, and Workshop Companion. It’s the non-standard format that I don’t particularly enjoy, and 2 out of 3 such editions were both summer releases (A&S and Byline, with Dime Novel being a Fall edition). Clearly, plenty of people disagree with me because Field Notes thought it was worthwhile to make Front Page, a spinoff of Byline, and Pitch Black in the A&S size, as part of their regular, non-limited lineup.

Speaking of spinoffs, Summer also inspired the most number of  additions to the regular Field Notes lineup. Besides the already-mentioned A&S and Byline, Night Sky led to Pitch Black (1st version), and County Fair led to, well, County Fair, and they were both summer releases. County Fair was the first one! I still chuckle whenever I see “so complicated” next to the edition size for County Fair.

threestaples-fnc-summer-02.jpg

Despite summer not being one of my favorite FN seasons, it still has plenty of “firsts” worth noting. Here are some of them:

  • Grass Stain Green: letterpress, graph grid in new color
  • County Fair: Neenah Paper cover
  • Day Game: A Drive Into the Gap, first book published by Field Notes
  • Night Sky: silver holographic foil, black staples, reticle-graph grid, no “Practical Applications”
  • Arts & Sciences: 4.75" x 7.5" size, 2-pack, Mohawk paper cover
  • Workshop Companion: custom slipcase, brass staples
  • Byline: Reporter’s notebook, wire-bound

What kind of “firsts” is this year’s summer edition going to boast? Not that it has to have any. I just can’t wait. By the way, the teaser image in the “A Note to Subscribers” email was just a straightforward picture of a blue sky with some wisps of cloud and rays of sun. “It’s just a nice summer sky,” they say. Uh huh.

I should mention, Workshop Companion is still strangely available at Field Notes website, here. The only summer quarterly edition that hasn’t sold out yet! Maybe because it’s a 6-pack, with higher price tag? At $19.95, it’s actually become a more economical choice since the price increase, heh.

Anyway, what are some of your favorites in this group of summer releases? Besides GSG and Night Sky, I really like County Fair and Day Game, too.
