“Grout Gray” Field Notes

November 4, 2019

Here are some pictures of Field Notes that use French Paper Construction in Grout Gray and some differences among them that are noteworthy. There are three editions so far that I know of:

  • Design Trilogy

  • 2015 Tournament of Books (Rooster)

  • Field Notes × Wilco

The Wilco edition was added to the FN online shop earlier this year (July 2019) and the other two are from 2015. Design Trilogy was part of a Kickstarter project by filmmaker Gary Hustwit, and the singles didn’t become publicly available online until, I believe, December 2017.

When I first received the Wilco 6-pack, I didn’t realize this light, warm gray was not new to us until I read the specs on the back cover. I really liked this color in Design Trilogy, so it was a treat to see it again in Wilco with colorful illustrations.

All three editions use the 100 lb. card stock version of Grout Gray but only the Wilco edition features the 60#T French Opaque Smooth paper for the innards. Design Trilogy and 2015 ToB use the 50#T version. Interestingly, these two are both dated January 2015 on the back cover and both have innards printed in Pantone Cool Gray 2. But all have different rulings: Wilco features dot-graph grid, Design Trilogy graph grid, and 2015 ToB ruled lines.

As for the color of the texts inside, Design Trilogy is printed in “Dachshund Nose” black (same as the regular Kraft), 2015 ToB in “Rooster Red”, and Wilco in an unnamed blue. I personally love how this blue looks on the gray (all 6 different covers in Wilco are printed with the same blue inside).

Lastly, only the Design Trilogy includes the standard “Practical Applications”, the same ones in the regular Kraft Field Notes. The 2015 ToB has book titles and authors instead, while Wilco lists the names of Wilco members and artists they collaborated with.

Which “Grout Gray” is your favorite? Would you want to see it again in a future edition?

Field Notes: Instagram Polls (Part 1)

July 26, 2018

I’ve been conducting some Field Notes-related polls at my Instagram account @threestaples as Stories, and I’d like to share the results here (and add some comments) in case anybody missed them.

Coastal: West vs. East

  • Poll date: April 3, 2018

  • Total number of votes: 184

  • Winner: Coastal: West (56%)

It all started with Coastal, the 2018 Spring quarterly edition. With two different versions, it was hard not to wonder, which one would people prefer? I had no predictions, only that it would be a close race. And it was.

Heartbeat vs. Tournament of Books 2018

  • Poll date: April 7, 2018

  • Total number of votes: 157

  • Winner: Heartbeat (68%)

Heartbeat and the Tournament of Books 2018 were released around the same time in February, with similar colors (actually, with the same cover stock – French Paper Kraft-Tone in “Manila Yellow Kraft”), so I wanted to see which would be more popular. I was rooting for the Rooster, but it turned out to be a decisive victory for Heartbeat.

America the Beautiful vs. Campfire

  • Poll date: June 3, 2018

  • Total number of votes: 145

  • Winner: America the Beautiful (52%)

Just before Three Missions was released, I was thinking about summer editions in general including Campfire, which was last year’s summer edition. That led me to pull out the other  quarterly edition with a photographic cover, America the Beautiful (Spring 2013). Maybe I was biased, because AtB is the clear winner to me, but I was surprised to see it winning only by a hair. It was actually quite a roller coaster ride seeing the all votes coming in!

Lunacy vs. Three Missions

  • Poll date: July 14, 2018

  • Total number of votes: 249

  • Winner: Lunacy (63%)

With similar space theme, it was hard not to pit Three Missions against Lunacy (Fall 2016) as soon as it was released. I actually thought Three Missions would win, judging from the positive, enthusiastic response I saw when it was first announced, so Lunacy’s victory was a surprise.

Night Sky vs. Lunacy

  • Poll date: July 21, 2018

  • Total number of votes: 247

  • Winner: Night Sky (60%)

But Lunacy is no match against Night Sky! My favorite edition, possibly of all time, wins! Since Night Sky (Summer 2013) is a much older edition compared to Lunacy (Fall 2016), I wondered how people would respond, but I think I knew, deep down, that Night Sky would be the clear winner.

What are your reactions to my polls? Keep in mind, these results represent only a small percentage of Field Notes fans, people who follow me and happen to view my Instagram Stories at the right time. Plus the polls are open only for 24 hours. You know what? I think Field Notes should do their own polls! That should be really interesting.

At any rate, I plan on doing more, because I think they’re fun, and it’s another way to interact with fellow fans. So if you’d like to participate, feel free to follow me on Instagram @threestaples and watch out for new Stories! I did the last couple polls on Fridays, so maybe I’ll make it a Friday thing from now on. :)

February 2015 was HUGE for me, you guys. I got some shout outs directly from Jim Coudal and Field Notes.

And another one!

Thanks for that. :)
